Member: [Info. removed for customer's privacy] Categories: Decks & Porches Carpentry - Woodworking Remodeling - Sunrooms & Patio Enclosures Work Done: Yes * More Weight is given to a report where work has been completed. Work Completed Date: October 30, 2009 Hire Again: Yes Approximate Cost: $4,200.00 Home Build Year: 1979 Description Of Work: Built a 4 fiberglass column portico over a 6' x 4' brick patio entryway at a 2 story colonial home. Entire job took two days (day one with a crew of 5, day two with 2 people to wrap up). Member Comments: I recently moved to Virginia Beach and bought a two story colonial home. The house doesn't have a portico at the front door to protect the entryway from the rain. Since I always like the way a portico looks, I decided to hire a contractor to build one over my 6' x 4' brick porch. I searched the internet and found quite a few builders specializing in building porticos. However, they were either in Northern Virginia or in Georgia. So I resorted to Angie's List to look for someone in the area that might be able to build a portico. I found Archadeck based on its reputation on the list and also because I figured that if they can do a patio enclosure, a portico should be no problem. I contacted Archadeck, and Jim (the owner) was very professional and showed up at the appointed time to do an estimate. He wasn't too familiar with building a pure portico, but he knows construction and woodwork very well. So I was comfortable proceeding with him. At the initial trip, he gave me a ball park quote of around $3,000. Regrettably, the initial quote of $3,000 was a bit off because of the costs of materials were higher than expected. But Jim did immediately inform me, so I had the opportunity to back off if I didn't want to proceed. The revised estimate of $4,200 was more than I liked, but from searching online, it was still roughly in line with what a portico with four fiberglass columns should cost. So I decided to proceed. As for payment, 1/3 of the $4,200 was paid once the contract was signed, 1/3 paid on the first day of work after the materials were delivered, and the final 1/3 was paid upon completion. Jim was very helpful with picking the right style of column and his company did the detailed design work based on the portico pictures I provided. They also went to the city hall and did the necessary paperwork. The construction took place on time, and it was done professionally and much quicker than I expected. Overall, I am very pleased with the final product. The four column portico looks great and it made the house just the way I want it. I think Jim and his crew did a great job and I highly recommend them if anyone needs a portico built.

Member: [Info. removed for customer's privacy] Categories: Decks & Porches Fencing Work Done: Yes * More Weight is given to a report where work has been completed. Hire Again: Yes Approximate Cost: $6,300.00 Description Of Work: Tore out an old porch and stairs and replaced it with a 12 ft X 8 ft deck and wide stairs. They also built a 20 ft section of fence. Member Comments: My old back porch was small and the steps were deteriorating, I had to fix the problem quickly prior to a deployment. I contacted Jim Klingbail and he arranged to come to the house and meet with me. He came at a time convenient to my schedule and was very punctual. He looked over the existing structure and my sketch of what I wanted done, then walked around the porch and the backyard asking pertinent questions and listening to my comments and concerns. At my request he then drew up a professional and tidy plan for my review and approval. It was just what I wanted. It was the Friday before Christmas week so we picked the Saturday after Christmas as the start day. The materials were delivered as promised, then the crew showed up on Saturday morning and got to work. They tore out the existing structure and replaced it with an excellent and sturdy 8 X 12 deck with nice wide stairs. The job was done, the site was clean and the debris was hauled away by Tuesday afternoon. Job completed in 4 days. The final price was within 1% of his estimate. I am very satisfied with the work done and have kept a few of Jim's business cards for my neighbors who are interested. One note about Mr Klingbail and his consideration for the customer. After we met he left via the front door, went down my front steps and paused at the thin strip of grass (freshly seeded this fall and still struggling) between my sidewalk and the street where his truck was parked. Rather than walk on my grass he went 20 ft down the sidewalk to the driveway out in the street and back to the truck. Every other worker I have know in my life (including myself) would have tramped right over my new grass and climbed into his truck without a thought. It is a small point, but shows his consideration for the customer.
